I was lucky enough to be a part of the period in commercial music that still featured the ‘Big Jingle’; songs that were created specifically for major products. That era seems to have passed in favor using old pop hits. I truly enjoyed working in the studio doing these spots. I wrote with Don Piestrup, John Bahler, Gary White, Sonny Curtis, and many other top writers in those days and it was a challenge, but one that I loved. The timelines were short and the pressure was always ON. The following is a sample of some of those jingles.

I credit my ability to work quickly and precisely with my years of composing and arranging music for commercials. There are few fields as high-pressure as commercial jingle writing!

Timings have to be precise, and with the compressed production schedules, you need to get it right the first time. There is no time to wait for the lightning bolt of inspiration. For example, I had one week where I had to create bluegrass, Count Basie style, and choral music. I had to learn to shift gears quickly!

You will certainly recognize my work. I have composed and arranged for over 800 commercials, for all kinds of merchandise. For me, the hardest music to score was for commercials that were cartoon-like. In a cartoon-y clip, you have slapstick action and every note has to hit precisely. When an acorn bounces off a squirrel’s head, there has to be perfectly timed “thork!”

I am proud that I worked in the commercial business during the golden age of the big commercials. I hope you enjoy a walk down memory lane as you listen to these clips.
